MOGADISHU – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has hosted referee Omar Abduqadir Cartan at the State Palace to honour his recent accolade as Africa’s Best Referee for 2025, awarded by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The reception highlighted Somalia’s growing presence in African football, with President Hassan praising Cartan’s dedication, professionalism, and consistent performance on the field. He described the award as a “historic achievement” that not only recognises Cartan’s individual talent but also reflects positively on Somalia’s contribution to international football.
“Referee Cartan’s success demonstrates the skill and commitment present in Somali sports professionals,” President Hassan said. “We are proud that his efforts have brought recognition to Somalia and we encourage him to continue representing our country with distinction.”
During the meeting, Cartan expressed gratitude for the warm reception and the President’s support. He said the CAF award motivates him to continue developing his career and promoting Somali refereeing standards on the international stage.
CAF’s recognition of Cartan comes after a year in which he officiated several high-profile matches across Africa, earning praise for his fairness, decision-making, and professionalism. Football analysts say such honours can help inspire young Somali referees and players, highlighting the potential for Somalia to play a larger role in continental football.
The State Palace event also underlined the government’s commitment to supporting Somali sports talent and providing international platforms for athletes, referees, and officials to excel.
