Nairobi —The United Nations has called for peace and restraint in Kenya, following deadly protests that have shaken the nation in recent days. In a statement issued on Thursday, the UN expressed “deep concern” over the violence that erupted during demonstrations, which has reportedly left at least 16 people dead and many others injured.
The protests, sparked by public anger over economic conditions and government policies, saw thousands take to the streets in major cities, including Nairobi and Mombasa. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces resulted in widespread disruption, property damage, and tragic loss of life.
While condemning the violence, the UN welcomed Kenya’s commitment to engage in dialogue and pursue peaceful solutions. The international body praised the efforts of Kenyan authorities, civil society groups, and community leaders who have called for calm and are working to restore order.
“We urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to respect the fundamental rights of all citizens, including the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression,” the UN statement read. “It is vital that all stakeholders come together in a spirit of inclusivity and cooperation to address the underlying concerns and prevent further violence.”
The UN also highlighted the importance of accountability, calling on Kenyan authorities to ensure that any use of force during the protests is investigated in line with international standards.
As the country navigates this challenging moment, the UN reaffirmed its support for Kenya’s efforts to strengthen dialogue, uphold human rights, and promote national unity.
