NAIROBI — Mohamed Amiin, the head of Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), has been elected as the African representative to the Executive Committee of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL). This prestigious position places him among the senior global leadership responsible for guiding INTERPOL’s strategic direction, policy development, and international policing priorities.
Mohamed Amiin, who is of Somali origin, secured the seat after competing against several strong candidates from across Africa, including nominees from South Africa, Tunisia, Nigeria, and Cameroon. His victory reflects not only personal recognition for his experience in law enforcement but also the growing trust and influence of Kenya within global security institutions.
In this new role, Amiin will represent the entire African continent within INTERPOL’s Executive Committee. He will contribute to shaping decisions on international cooperation against transnational crimes such as terrorism, human trafficking, cybercrime, drug smuggling, and money laundering—issues that heavily affect many African countries, including Kenya and Somalia.
As a member of the committee, he will also serve as the official representative of Kenya within INTERPOL, helping to strengthen collaboration between Kenya’s law enforcement agencies and police forces around the world. This appointment is a significant achievement for Kenya’s security sector and enhances the country’s profile in international policing.
For the Somali community, his election is also a moment of pride, as he becomes one of the few individuals of Somali origin to hold such an influential position in global law enforcement.
