CAIRO – Somalia’s Minister of Defence, Ahmed Macalin Fiqi, accompanied by the Chief of the Somali National Army, departed Mogadishu on Monday for an official visit to Egypt.

The Ministry of Defence has not yet released full details of the trip, but officials say the visit is expected to focus on strengthening the strategic and military cooperation between the two countries. The delegation is also scheduled to hold high-level meetings with Egyptian defence and security officials.

The visit comes at a time when Somalia is seeking to deepen partnerships with regional and international allies as it continues its security transition and efforts to rebuild its national forces.

Egypt has recently shown increasing interest in expanding its engagement in Somalia. According to diplomatic sources, Cairo is planning to deploy a contingent of its military personnel to join the African Union’s support mission in Somalia, as part of broader regional security cooperation.

Both governments are expected to discuss training support, capacity-building programmes, and joint efforts aimed at enhancing Somalia’s defence sector as it prepares for the full transfer of security responsibilities from international forces.

More details about the visit are expected to emerge in the coming days.
