CAIRO – Somalia’s Federal Minister of Defence, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, alongside the Chief of the Somali National Army, General Odowaa Yusuf Raage, and senior military officials, has participated in a major international defence exhibition in the Egyptian capital.

The event, hosted by the Government of Egypt, showcased a wide array of modern and domestically manufactured weaponry, drawing military delegations from around the world.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi officially opened the exhibition, which brought together representatives from 100 countries and more than 450 international defence companies displaying advanced technologies, equipment, and defence systems.

Somali officials say the delegation will hold a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the EDEX 2025 exhibition, engaging with military leaders, defence industry representatives, and partner states. The talks are aimed at strengthening cooperation in defence capabilities, military training, technology transfer, and regional security.

Somalia regards its participation in EDEX 2025 as a key opportunity to modernise its defence sector, especially as the country continues operations against al-Shabaab and ISIS-linked groups. Officials believe improved access to cutting-edge equipment and stronger international partnerships will bolster efforts to build a more capable and professional national army.

The delegation’s presence in Cairo reflects Mogadishu’s wider strategy to deepen defence cooperation with regional and global partners as Somalia enters a new phase of security transition and counter-terrorism operations.
