ANKARA — Turkey’s Foreign Ministry has strongly criticized Israel’s announcement recognizing Somaliland as an independent state, calling the move illegal and a direct interference in Somalia’s internal affairs.
In a statement released Friday, the ministry said Israel’s claim was “another example of the unlawful actions of the Netanyahu government,” accusing it of pursuing policies that fuel regional and international instability.
Turkey said Israel’s decision, which it linked to what it described as expansionist policies and continued opposition to recognition of a Palestinian state, represents a clear violation of Somalia’s sovereignty. The ministry stressed that decisions concerning the future of Somalia and the Somaliland region must reflect the will of the entire Somali people.
“Such steps constitute blatant interference in Somalia’s internal affairs,” the statement said, adding that any political decisions regarding Somalia’s territorial status should be made through inclusive and legitimate processes.
Turkey reaffirmed its strong support for Somalia’s independence, unity and territorial integrity, noting its long-standing role in supporting peace and security in the Horn of Africa. Ankara said it would continue to stand with the Somali people and support efforts aimed at maintaining stability in the region.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not been recognized by the United Nations. Israel’s reported recognition has sparked sharp reactions from Mogadishu and drawn criticism from several regional and international actors.
