CAIRO — The Arab League has strongly rejected any attempt to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, reaffirming that Somaliland is an integral region of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
In a statement issued by the League’s General Secretariat, the organization said it fully supports Somalia’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and considers any recognition of Somaliland a violation of international law.
“The Arab League firmly rejects any actions that aim to undermine the unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” the statement said. “Somaliland remains a part of Somalia, and no unilateral recognition can change this legal and political reality.”
The Arab League warned that such steps could inflame tensions in the Horn of Africa and threaten regional stability, particularly along the strategic Red Sea and Gulf of Aden corridors.
The League urged member states and international partners to refrain from any measures that encourage fragmentation, calling instead for dialogue, stability and respect for Somalia’s internationally recognized borders.
Somalia has been a member of the Arab League since 1974, and the organization has consistently opposed secessionist efforts within Arab states.
