WASHINGTON — The U.S. State Department has reiterated its support for Somalia’s territorial integrity, saying it continues to recognize Somaliland as part of Somalia.
In a statement cited by Sky News, the department said Washington remains committed to Somalia’s unity and sovereignty, aligning with long-standing international consensus. The statement came amid growing diplomatic fallout following Israel’s announcement recognizing Somaliland.
Somalia’s government has welcomed the U.S. position, describing it as an important affirmation of international law and a rejection of unilateral actions that could destabilize the Horn of Africa.
Most countries and international organizations continue to treat Somaliland as part of Somalia, despite the region’s self-declared independence in 1991.
