MOGADISHU — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has alleged that Somaliland authorities have agreed to resettle Palestinians, host an Israeli military base, and join the Abraham Accords, according to remarks he made in a recent interview with Al Jazeera television.
Speaking during the interview, President Mohamud said Somaliland — the self-declared republic in northern Somalia that is not internationally recognized — had consented to plans that would involve relocating Palestinians to its territory. He also claimed that the region had agreed to grant Israel access to establish a military base and to align itself with the Abraham Accords, a series of U.S.-brokered agreements normalizing relations between Israel and several Arab states.
“Somaliland has agreed to resettle Palestinians on its territory, to host an Israeli military base, and to join the Abraham Accords,” Mohamud said, according to the interview aired by Al Jazeera.
The Somali government strongly opposes any unilateral actions by Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not been recognized by the United Nations or any major international body. Mogadishu considers Somaliland an integral part of Somalia’s sovereign territory and has repeatedly warned foreign governments against engaging directly with the region.
President Mohamud did not provide evidence during the interview to support the claims, and Somaliland authorities did not immediately respond to the allegations. Israel also has not publicly commented on the assertions.
The comments come amid heightened regional tensions and renewed diplomatic activity related to the conflict in Gaza, as well as ongoing debates over international recognition and foreign military presence in the Horn of Africa.
Somalia has long expressed strong support for the Palestinian cause and maintains that any agreements involving Somali territory must be conducted through the federal government in Mogadishu.
