CAIRO, (HAN) – The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit welcomed the decision by the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia to officially recognize the State of Palestine.

In a statement posted on his official account on X (formerly Twitter), Aboul-Gheit described the recognition as a “correction of a long-standing historical mistake.”

He added that the move aligns with the demands of the peoples in these countries, who have consistently voiced support for the Palestinian right to independence and a dignified life. “We hope to see more weighty and influential recognitions at the international level in the near future,” Aboul-Gheit said.

The announcement from Britain came earlier on Sunday when the country’s newly elected Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, confirmed in a video message that the UK had “formally recognized the State of Palestine,” urging the international community to return to the two-state solution as the basis for peace.

Similarly, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong issued a joint statement affirming: “Australia recognizes the legitimate and long-standing aspirations of the Palestinian people to establish their own independent state.”

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney released an official statement confirming Canada’s recognition of Palestine, marking part of a growing international stance in support of Palestinian statehood.
