JUBA — African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has strongly condemned a deadly attack on a United Nations peacekeeping patrol in Jonglei State, South Sudan, that left two Ethiopian peacekeepers dead and seven others injured.
Youssouf expressed his condolences to the families, colleagues and government of the two Ethiopian peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving in the UN peacekeeping mission. He also wished a swift recovery to those wounded in the attack.
The AU Commission Chairperson called on the South Sudanese authorities to launch a prompt, transparent and thorough investigation into the incident. He urged authorities to identify the perpetrators, establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and ensure that those responsible are held accountable and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The attack highlights the continuing security challenges facing South Sudan, particularly in areas affected by armed violence and communal tensions. Peacekeeping personnel remain vulnerable while carrying out patrols and supporting efforts to protect civilians and maintain stability.
Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union’s support for the United Nations and its peacekeeping personnel in South Sudan, stressing that attacks against peacekeepers are unacceptable and undermine international efforts to promote peace, security and stability.
The AU also called for strengthened cooperation between South Sudanese authorities, the UN and regional partners to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of personnel working to support peace and civilians across the country.
