ADDIS ABABA — The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has held talks with Iran’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the AU, H.E. Ali Akbar Rezaei, focusing on strengthening cooperation between Iran, Africa, and the African Union.

During the meeting, the AU Commission Chairperson highlighted the long-standing relations between Iran and Africa, noting Iran’s historical and cultural ties and its growing engagement with the continent.

Ambassador Rezaei delivered a message from Iran’s Foreign Minister, reaffirming Tehran’s commitment to expanding cooperation with the AU and its member states in areas of shared interest.

Both sides discussed potential collaboration in science, technology, innovation, and capacity building, emphasizing the importance of strengthening partnerships to support development goals across Africa.

Iran also reaffirmed its commitment to continue providing scholarships for African students, including through cooperation with the AU, as part of broader educational exchange initiatives.

The AU Chairperson welcomed recent diplomatic developments between the United States and Iran and encouraged continued dialogue and constructive negotiations, stressing that diplomacy remains key to resolving international disputes.

He also raised concerns over instability in the Strait of Hormuz and broader Gulf region, warning that disruptions to maritime trade routes have had significant effects on African economies, particularly in areas such as energy supplies, fertilizer imports, and food security.

Ambassador Rezaei welcomed the AU’s consistent support for peaceful dispute resolution and dialogue, noting the organization’s role in promoting a rules-based international order.

The meeting underscored ongoing efforts to deepen AU–Iran cooperation while addressing global and regional challenges affecting Africa’s economic stability.
