JOWHAR — Burundian troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) distributed clean drinking water on Tuesday to approximately 200 residents of the Towfiiq internally displaced persons (IDP) camp on the outskirts of Jowhar, according to the contingent.
The humanitarian assistance was delivered by Burundian forces stationed at Jowhar Airport as part of their ongoing Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities aimed at supporting communities affected by conflict and recurring humanitarian crises.
Lieutenant Colonel Philbert Manirakiza, Deputy Head of Civil-Military Cooperation for AUSSOM Sector Five, said the mission remains committed to assisting vulnerable populations affected by armed conflict and natural disasters.
“Our commitment is to stand alongside communities facing hardship,” Manirakiza said, adding that the water distribution initiative will continue until a sustainable, long-term solution to the area’s water needs is found.
The Towfiiq IDP camp is home to families displaced by conflict, climate-related shocks, and other humanitarian emergencies. Many residents continue to face shortages of safe drinking water and other essential services.
AUSSOM peacekeepers have expanded their community outreach initiatives by combining security operations with humanitarian assistance projects aimed at strengthening relations with local communities and improving living conditions for vulnerable civilians.
The latest water distribution comes as humanitarian organizations continue to warn that many internally displaced communities across Somalia remain in urgent need of clean water, healthcare, shelter, and other basic services, particularly during periods of prolonged drought and recurring flooding.
