OUAGADOUGOU — An attempted coup against Burkina Faso’s President, Capt. Ibrahim Traoré, was thwarted overnight as the world’s attention remained focused on the political crisis in Venezuela, authorities and local sources said.
The failed coup followed swift public mobilization after reports of the plot emerged. Thousands of citizens poured into the streets in a show of support for Traoré’s government, signaling strong public resistance to any unconstitutional change of power.
The demonstrations echoed memories of the late revolutionary leader Thomas Sankara, with many protesters emphasizing their determination to prevent a return to foreign domination or political instability. Protesters carried national flags and chanted slogans calling for sovereignty and unity.
Unconfirmed reports circulating locally have accused foreign interference — particularly from France — of being linked to the attempted coup. French authorities have not responded to the allegations, and no independent verification has been made.
Analysts say the strong popular backing for Traoré could strengthen cooperation between the government and the public at a critical moment. However, they warn that Burkina Faso remains vulnerable to external influence and internal security threats amid ongoing regional instability in the Sahel.
Government officials have not yet released detailed information on arrests or casualties related to the failed coup.
