MOGADISHU – Somalia’s Federal Government has appointed Colonel Ali Agey as the new commander of the 27th Division of the Somali National Army (SNA), which operates across the regions of Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle.

Col. Agey is widely remembered for his successful military campaigns in Sabiib, Canole, and Bariire, as well as for securing Haradhere in Mudug region from Al-Shabaab militants. His appointment is seen as a significant step toward revitalizing one of the most crucial army units in central Somalia.
The 27th Division, once a vital force in the fight against Al-Shabaab, has in recent months suffered setbacks due to what military insiders describe as “inappropriate leadership appointments.” Many locals believe this weakened the division’s effectiveness and left large rural areas vulnerable to militant attacks.

Community elders and members of the Ma’awisley militia from the Hawadle clan—a powerful grassroots force that has supported the Somali army in the war against Al-Shabaab—welcomed Agey’s appointment. They expressed hope that the decision would restore both security and stability to liberated territories.
Military observers say the move may also ease tensions between the Hawadle clan and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration, which has been criticized for sidelining or sacking influential Hawadle figures despite their frontline role in counterterrorism operations.
The newly appointed commander is expected to begin re-organizing his forces immediately, with locals anticipating renewed offensives against Al-Shabaab strongholds in Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle.
