MOGADISHU – Heavy fighting broke out early Thursday morning between Somali government forces and armed civilians in the Hodan district of Mogadishu, centering around the Horseed Stadium near Tarabuunka junction. The site, formerly home to the Somali military’s Horseed football team, has recently become a hotspot of tension due to a government plan to evict local residents.

Eyewitnesses report that the clashes began when government troops launched an operation targeting armed individuals who had gathered inside the stadium compound.

The group, reportedly opposed to the planned evictions, resisted, sparking intense gunfire exchanges.

Both sides are said to be using a variety of weapons, and the sound of heavy and light gunfire could be heard across nearby neighborhoods. While reports indicate casualties, official figures on the number of dead or injured have not yet been released.

The situation remains tense, with residents in surrounding areas urged to stay indoors.

However, Security forces have reportedly cordoned off roads leading to the stadium as the standoff continues.
