RIYADH – The foreign ministers of Egypt and Somalia held a separate meeting in Riyadh on Saturday to discuss ways to strengthen strategic and economic cooperation between the two countries.
Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Abdel-Atty praised the deep-rooted relationship between Egypt and Somalia, emphasizing both nations’ commitment to enhancing bilateral ties, particularly in the areas of trade, development, and investment. Abdel-Atty highlighted the upcoming opening of the Bank of Egypt in Somalia, a move expected to significantly facilitate business transactions between the two nations.
Abdel-Atty reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, calling them pillars of stability in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. He firmly rejected any unilateral actions or attempts to create parallel administrations or new political realities outside the internationally recognized legal framework.
The minister also highlighted Egypt’s continued support for Somalia through joint statements issued by 23 countries and two regional organizations, as well as ministerial sessions held under the Peace and Security Council, stressing the importance of sustained coordination to reinforce Somalia’s sovereignty and independence.
Egypt further pledged its commitment to supporting Somalia’s institution-building efforts and initiatives aimed at ensuring security and stability, particularly in combating terrorism and extremism. Abdel-Atty emphasized the need for both regional and international cooperation to prevent terrorist attacks and dismantle the roots of extremism.
Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdiasis Abdi Ali “Dhaay” expressed appreciation for Egypt’s support, saying, “We value Egypt’s unwavering commitment to Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and development. Our partnership is key to strengthening security and fostering economic growth for the benefit of our peoples.”
He also confirmed Egypt’s support for ongoing efforts to enhance Somalia’s security, stability, and development, underlining the importance of continued collaboration with international partners to secure sustainable funding for the African Union Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) to fulfill its mandate.
