ASMARA, (HAN) — Eritrea on Thursday sharply condemned Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party for what it described as an “excessive appetite” to link the Blue Nile River with the Red Sea, calling recent remarks from Addis Ababa “bewildering” and “irrational.”

In a statement posted on X, Eritrean Information Minister Yemane G.

Meskel accused Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s party of promoting “deceptive narratives” aimed at justifying “regional ambitions that lack any geographic or legal basis.”

“There is no interface, intersection, or connection between the Blue Nile River and the Red Sea,” Meskel said. “This ‘Potemkin Party’s’ trap is pathetic and crude — unsellable even by the standards of previous deceptions.”

Meskel said the comments reflect a recurring pattern of “misleading justifications” used by “expansionist powers” to rationalize their ambitions, warning that such rhetoric could “ignite another unnecessary confrontation” in an already volatile region.

Eritrea reiterated that it “harbors no desire for war” but will defend its sovereignty if provoked. President Isaias Afwerki, in a recent interview, stressed that Eritrea “has no territorial claims or ambitions against any neighboring state” and urged Ethiopia “not to drag its people into a futile conflict.”
