Ethiopia Expels Senior Egyptian Diplomat as Regional Tensions Intensify

ADDIS ABABA — Regional tensions have intensified following Ethiopia’s reported decision to declare a senior Egyptian diplomat persona non grata, ordering him to leave the country amid increasingly strained relations in the Horn of Africa.

The diplomat, Ahmed Mokharem Ahmed, is reportedly a senior official at the Egyptian Embassy in Addis Ababa. Ethiopian authorities have reportedly informed him that he is no longer welcome in the country, although the specific reasons behind the decision have not been publicly detailed.

The reported expulsion comes shortly after developments involving Ethiopia’s diplomatic mission in Eritrea, adding to concerns over a possible deterioration in relations between Addis Ababa and neighboring countries.

The latest diplomatic tensions are unfolding against the backdrop of renewed fighting and political instability in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. The conflict has increasingly drawn attention to the wider regional dynamics surrounding Ethiopia and its neighbors.

Ethiopia has previously accused Eritrea, Egypt and Sudan of playing roles in supporting or contributing to forces and political developments that Addis Ababa considers threats to its national security. The countries involved have disputed such accusations, and the extent of any external involvement remains a subject of regional and international debate.

Relations between Ethiopia and Egypt have also been affected by longstanding disagreements over the Nile River and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). The two countries have repeatedly engaged in negotiations while maintaining differing positions over the operation of the dam and regional water security.

Ethiopia’s relationship with Eritrea has also remained sensitive despite the 2018 peace agreement that ended decades of hostility between the two countries. Subsequent disagreements over security and developments in northern Ethiopia have continued to influence relations.

Sudan’s ongoing conflict has added another layer of complexity to the regional situation. Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan all have strategic interests linked to border security, the Nile and political stability in the region.

The reported expulsion of the Egyptian diplomat therefore comes at a particularly sensitive moment, as diplomatic relations and security calculations among the countries of the Horn of Africa and Nile Basin remain closely interconnected.

However, the precise circumstances surrounding the diplomat’s expulsion, including the specific allegations against him, have not been fully disclosed publicly.

The developments are likely to attract further attention from regional governments and international partners concerned about the possibility that Ethiopia’s internal conflicts could contribute to wider diplomatic and security tensions across the Horn of Africa.
