MOGADISHU — Somalia has received the credentials of the European Union’s newly appointed ambassador to the country, Lazlo Mati, as Mogadishu and the EU seek to further strengthen diplomatic and development cooperation.
Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hassan Muhammad Ali (Nadara), received a copy of Mati’s credentials during a meeting in Mogadishu.
The meeting also included discussions related to the transition from the outgoing EU ambassador and continued diplomatic engagement between Somalia and the European Union.
The Deputy Minister expressed the Somali government’s appreciation for the EU’s continued support, particularly its stated backing for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is prepared to work closely with the new EU ambassador to expand cooperation in key areas, including peace and security, institution-building, trade and development.
Mati succeeds the EU’s previous ambassador to Somalia at a time when both sides are seeking to deepen their partnership and strengthen cooperation on Somalia’s political, security and economic priorities.
The European Union remains one of Somalia’s major international partners, with cooperation extending across governance, humanitarian assistance, development, security and efforts to strengthen state institutions.
