MOGADISHU — The European Union Ambassador to Somalia has urged Somali political leaders to return to dialogue amid rising tensions in the capital.
She warned that continued political confrontation risks undermining stability in Mogadishu at a sensitive moment for the country.
In a statement shared on social media, the envoy appealed for restraint among all political actors, saying dialogue is the only viable path to resolving disputes and preventing further escalation.
The ambassador also stressed the importance of protecting civilians as security tensions continue to affect parts of the capital.
She noted that recent developments in Mogadishu have included security operations and sporadic armed clashes involving multiple actors.
Diplomatic sources said international partners are increasingly concerned about the political standoff between federal authorities and opposition figures, warning that instability could threaten gains made in governance and security in recent years.
The envoy emphasized that confrontation risks reversing progress achieved through long-standing peace-building efforts and called for inclusive talks involving all key political stakeholders.
The European Union reiterated its support for Somalia’s state-building process and democratic institutions, urging leaders to prioritise national interest over political rivalry.
Meanwhile, authorities have warned of ongoing security operations targeting what they describe as illegal armed groups in the capital, while opposition figures have raised concerns over political targeting.
Observers say the latest diplomatic intervention reflects growing international concern over the risk of further escalation in Mogadishu, with analysts warning that without de-escalation and renewed talks, the crisis could have prolonged effects on civilians and governance.
