MOGADISHU — The European Union’s ambassador to Somalia has expressed deep concern over escalating political tensions in the southwestern regional state of Southwest State, calling on rival sides to engage in dialogue to prevent further instability.

Francesca Di Mauro said the ongoing political impasse risks undermining hard-won gains in security and governance if not addressed through inclusive and peaceful means.

“The only viable path toward lasting stability is open and constructive dialogue,” she said, urging all parties to show restraint and prioritize the interests of citizens over political differences.

The envoy welcomed ongoing mediation and reconciliation efforts and emphasized the need to give peace initiatives sufficient space to succeed. She warned that any escalation could worsen the security situation and disrupt efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions.

The political dispute in Southwest State comes at a sensitive time, as Somalia continues to work toward consolidating federal governance and preparing for future electoral processes.

The European Union has been a key partner in supporting stability and development in Somalia and appears to be intensifying diplomatic pressure for a peaceful resolution to the standoff.
