BRUSSELS — The European Union has firmly rejected reports of a decision by Israel to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, reaffirming its full support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, EU officials said.

In a statement, the EU emphasized that it continues to recognize Somalia within its internationally acknowledged borders and reiterated that any changes to the country’s status must occur through inclusive dialogue and in line with international law. The bloc stressed that it does not support unilateral actions that undermine Somalia’s unity or stability. 🇸🇴🇪🇺

Somali officials and analysts say the reported move by Israel highlights intensifying geopolitical competition in the Horn of Africa, a strategically vital region that borders key global maritime routes, including the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. These waterways are among the world’s busiest shipping lanes, linking Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Observers note that foreign involvement in the region is increasingly driven by strategic and security interests, particularly access to ports, military positioning and influence over maritime trade corridors. Somali commentators warn that such external interests often conflict with the long-term aspirations of the Somali people.

“This is a clear example of how foreign agendas can intersect with fragile political contexts,” Somali political analysts said, adding that external interventions have historically failed to serve Somalia’s national interests.

The Somali government has repeatedly stated that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somalia, despite the region’s self-declared independence in 1991, which has not been recognized by the United Nations or the African Union.

Somali civil society voices are calling for greater public awareness, urging citizens to remain vigilant against foreign maneuvers that they say prioritize strategic gain over the will of the Somali people.

“Our position is clear and non-negotiable,” Somali officials said. “Respect for Somalia’s internationally recognized borders, sovereignty and unity is inviolable. No external recognition can alter this legal and political reality.”
