Mogadishu — The federal government’s ongoing nationwide weapons collection campaign has been described by officials as a long-standing state policy aimed at strengthening security and restoring public order across the country.
Authorities say the initiative is not new, but part of a broader and continuous effort to centralize arms that have remained in civilian possession for years.
The Deputy Minister of Information of the Federal Government of Somalia, Abdirahman Yusuf Al-adaala, emphasized that the policy is not directed at any specific group, clan, individual, or geographic region.
He said instead that it is a national security measure intended to benefit all citizens without exception.
Government representatives noted that the presence of uncontrolled weapons in communities continues to pose a serious threat to stability.
They warned that illegal or unregistered firearms contribute to crime, clan conflict, and insecurity in both urban and rural areas.
The campaign, they said, seeks to ensure that all weapons are registered, stored, or managed under official state control.
According to authorities, the effort is part of a wider plan to rebuild public trust in national security institutions.
They added that the long-term objective is to create an environment in which civilians no longer feel the need to keep weapons for personal protection.
Officials stressed that the policy is inclusive and applies equally to all citizens, regardless of background or opinions about the process.
They acknowledged that some individuals may feel concerned or uncomfortable about surrendering weapons, but said the broader public interest must take priority.
The government reiterated that the initiative is designed to support peacebuilding efforts and strengthen the rule of law across the country.
Security agencies have already begun collecting and transferring weapons to designated storage facilities under strict supervision.
Officials said these facilities are intended to prevent misuse and ensure proper accountability in the handling of recovered arms.
They also emphasized that community cooperation is essential for the success of the programme, urging citizens to support the initiative.
Despite differing views, authorities insist the policy reflects a shared national interest in achieving long-term stability and reducing violence.
