MOGADISHU — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud says his government is engaging with friendly Arab countries to discuss the issue of Somaliland’s international recognition, as diplomatic debate over the territory’s status continues to intensify.
Speaking about Somalia’s diplomatic efforts, President Hassan Sheikh said:
“We are speaking with the Arab countries that are our friends so that we can discuss the issue of Somaliland’s recognition.”
The President’s remarks come amid renewed regional and international attention surrounding Somaliland’s long-standing campaign for international recognition and Somalia’s efforts to defend its territorial integrity.
Somaliland has maintained its claim to independence since 1991 and has sought diplomatic support from a number of countries. Somalia, meanwhile, continues to reject Somaliland’s independence claim and considers the territory part of the Somali state.
Somalia Seeks Support From Arab Partners
President Hassan Sheikh’s statement indicates that Somalia is seeking to strengthen diplomatic coordination with Arab countries that it considers close partners.
The Arab world has significant political, economic and strategic interests in the Horn of Africa, particularly because of the region’s proximity to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Somalia’s engagement with Arab governments could therefore become an important component of its diplomatic strategy as discussions surrounding Somaliland’s status continue.
Recognition Debate Intensifies
The question of Somaliland’s recognition remains one of the most sensitive political issues in the Horn of Africa.
While Somaliland has intensified its international diplomatic campaign, Somalia has consistently argued that any move toward recognition would undermine its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
President Hassan Sheikh’s latest comments suggest that Mogadishu intends to continue diplomatic engagement with regional partners as it responds to developments surrounding Somaliland’s recognition campaign.
