MOGADISHU — Ambassadors representing Somalia’s key international partners have held discussions with opposition leaders in Mogadishu, urging Somali political actors to engage in final negotiations aimed at resolving ongoing disagreements over the country’s political transition.
Sources familiar with the meeting said the talks took place on Monday inside the heavily secured Halane compound and involved representatives from the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, and the African Union.
The meeting brought together senior opposition figures from the Future Forum political coalition, including former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, and lawmaker Abdi Hassan Cosoble.
Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni, Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Ahmed Madobe), and opposition politician Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame also participated virtually, according to sources familiar with the discussions.
The engagement comes amid growing international concern over Somalia’s political disagreements, particularly disputes surrounding the electoral process, constitutional reforms, and the direction of the country’s political transition.
Sources said international partners presented what they described as a coordinated message emphasizing the need for Somali leaders to reach a political understanding through dialogue and compromise.
The diplomats reportedly informed the opposition representatives that the mediation process had entered what they described as a final stage, with discussions now moving from technical consultations to direct engagement between political leaders.
According to sources, all sides are expected to participate in a face-to-face meeting before August 15 in an effort to achieve a political agreement and prevent further escalation of tensions.
The international partners reportedly emphasized the importance of holding the meeting before the deadline and said they would support the participation of Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni and Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe in the discussions.
Sources also said the diplomats warned that failure to reach an agreement could lead international partners to consider additional measures, although details of any possible actions were not disclosed.
The reported discussions come at a critical moment for Somalia, where disagreements between the federal government and several opposition leaders have raised concerns about political stability and the implementation of planned reforms.
Somalia’s political process has historically depended on negotiations among federal leaders, regional administrations and political stakeholders, with international partners often playing a facilitating role during periods of disagreement.
