TEHRAN — A senior adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Shamkhani, on Tuesday strongly rejected threats by U.S. President Donald Trump, who warned that Washington would directly intervene if Iranian authorities use force against ongoing protests in cities across the country.

Shamkhani, who is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures within Iran’s political and security establishment and a potential successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said Iranians are fully aware of what he described as America’s record of interference in other countries.

He argued that U.S. claims of “protecting civilians” have historically resulted in devastation, citing Iraq, Afghanistan and Gaza as examples where American involvement led to prolonged conflict and humanitarian crises.

“Any interference aimed at Iran’s national security, regardless of the pretext under which it is carried out, will be stopped before it reaches its objective,” Shamkhani said in remarks carried by state-linked media. “Such actions will be met with a response that will bring deep regret.”

Trump has repeatedly criticized Iran’s leadership over its handling of internal unrest and has warned of consequences if Tehran escalates its response to demonstrations.
