TEHRAN — Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, has travelled to Tehran as Doha steps up diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions between Iran and the United States and create conditions for renewed dialogue.
During meetings with Iranian officials, Qatar discussed efforts to de-escalate the conflict, restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and explore arrangements to improve maritime security. Qatar and Iran also discussed a joint project to help clear mines from the strategic waterway.
The Qatari visit comes as the United States maintains strong economic pressure on Tehran. President Donald Trump has said he is “not in a hurry” for Iran to return to negotiations and that he has no fixed timetable for restarting talks.
Washington says it is currently not engaged in negotiations with Iran, while the Trump administration continues its economic pressure campaign against Tehran. The White House has also indicated that military options remain available.
Iran, meanwhile, has continued to insist on conditions for renewed dialogue, particularly regarding sanctions, the Strait of Hormuz and its broader security interests. Tehran has rejected what it describes as excessive U.S. pressure and has called for an end to measures it considers hostile.
The Strait of Hormuz remains at the center of the crisis because it is a critical route for global energy shipments. Any prolonged disruption could affect oil prices, international trade and economies across the Gulf region. Recent diplomatic efforts have therefore focused heavily on restoring safe navigation through the waterway.
Qatar’s mediation comes alongside diplomatic efforts by other regional countries, including Pakistan and Oman, as governments seek a way to prevent further escalation and bring Washington and Tehran back toward negotiations.
For now, however, there is no confirmed U.S.-Iran negotiating process underway, leaving Qatar and other mediators facing a difficult challenge in narrowing the gap between the two sides.
