OL KALOU – Journalists from Nation Media Group were reportedly attacked by armed men wearing balaclavas while carrying out their professional duties at the AC Primary polling station in Ol Kalou.
According to reports from the scene, the incident occurred as members of the media were covering developments related to polling activities when a group of armed individuals confronted the journalists and allegedly used force to prevent them from documenting events.
Among those affected was an NTV cameraman who was reportedly subjected to a stun-gun attack before being physically assaulted. Witnesses indicated that the cameraman was beaten by the assailants, and his camera equipment was confiscated during the incident. A reporter accompanying the crew also had his mobile phone seized at gunpoint.
The attack has raised serious concerns among media organizations, press freedom advocates, and human rights groups, who argue that journalists must be allowed to carry out their duties without intimidation, harassment, or violence. The seizure of journalistic equipment and interference with news gathering activities have been condemned as actions that undermine freedom of the press and the public’s right to access information.
Media stakeholders have called for an immediate investigation into the incident, urging authorities to identify those responsible and ensure accountability. They have also demanded the return of all confiscated equipment and the protection of journalists covering public events and electoral processes.
The incident comes amid heightened public attention on polling activities, with journalists playing a critical role in providing independent coverage and ensuring transparency. Press freedom organizations have reiterated that attacks against media personnel not only endanger individual journalists but also threaten democratic principles and public access to information.
Authorities had not immediately issued a detailed statement regarding the attack at the time of reporting. Further updates are expected as investigations continue and additional information emerges from officials and eyewitnesses.
