Kenya Defends Security Measures Amid Violent Protests

Nairobi-The Government of Kenya has underscored its dedication to upholding peace, protecting critical infrastructure, and safeguarding constitutional freedoms in the wake of nationwide protests on June 25. In a comprehensive briefing to foreign missions and international organizations, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Musalia Mudavadi highlighted the government’s balanced response, aimed at maintaining public order while respecting the rights of citizens.

Dr. Mudavadi acknowledged the genuine concerns that motivated many peaceful demonstrators, including calls for social justice, economic relief, and reforms to enhance accountability. He reiterated the government’s openness to dialogue, noting that Kenya remains committed to addressing the challenges of high living costs and strengthening democratic governance.

While condemning the violence that unfortunately marred parts of the demonstrations, Dr. Mudavadi commended the professionalism and restraint shown by security agencies under difficult circumstances. He emphasized that while the Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful assembly, this right must be exercised without endangering public safety or engaging in destruction.

“Our security forces acted with remarkable discipline, even under extreme provocation, to protect lives and property,” said Dr. Mudavadi. The temporary suspension of live media broadcasts, he explained, was a measured step to prevent further escalation, and the government fully respected the court’s decision to restore signals.

Importantly, the government expressed deep regret for the loss of life and damage to property, particularly affecting small businesses and vulnerable communities. Dr. Mudavadi called for unity and constructive engagement to help rebuild and support those impacted.

Kenya reaffirmed its partnership with the international community in promoting peace, stability, and development. “Violence has no place in our society,” Dr. Mudavadi said. “Let us reflect honestly and work together to secure a brighter future for all Kenyans.”
