NAIROBI — Kenya’s Parliament Speaker, Moses Wetang’ula, has recently spoken warmly about the Somali community living in Kenya, reflecting on his early life and the influential figures who shaped his upbringing.

In remarks made at various public events, Wetang’ula recounted his childhood and highlighted the critical role played by a Somali woman he affectionately described as a mother figure. The politician, who has been a prominent figure in Kenyan politics for decades, expressed deep gratitude toward this woman, noting her contributions to his personal development and the local community.

Wetang’ula identified the woman as Mama Amina Mogeh Hirsi, a well-known entrepreneur and respected member of the Bungoma community in Kenya’s Western region and in Uganda. He described her as instrumental in nurturing him during his formative years and praised her for the positive impact she had on the area.

At a recent livestock farmers’ meeting in northeastern Kenya, Wetang’ula publicly acknowledged Mama Hirsi’s role in his upbringing, emphasizing that his growth and achievements were closely linked to her guidance and support.

His comments have drawn attention to the longstanding ties between the Kenyan Somali community and broader Kenyan society, highlighting the influence of Somali families in shaping local leadership and contributing to regional development.
