Lebanese Soldier Killed in Israeli Strike in South Lebanon Despite New Ceasefire

BEIRUT — The Lebanese army says one of its soldiers has been killed in an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon, just one day after a newly announced ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah came into effect.

In a statement, the Lebanese Armed Forces said the strike hit a military position in the south of the country, resulting in the death of one soldier. The army did not immediately provide further details on the location or circumstances of the incident.

The reported attack comes amid heightened tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border, where months of cross-border clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah have left hundreds dead and forced thousands of civilians to flee their homes.

The ceasefire deal, reached only a day earlier, had been widely welcomed as a potential step toward de-escalation after prolonged fighting that has destabilized the region. However, the latest incident raises immediate concerns over the durability of the agreement.

Israeli authorities have not yet issued an official comment on the reported strike.

The United Nations and international mediators had urged both sides to respect the ceasefire and avoid actions that could reignite full-scale conflict, warning that the situation in southern Lebanon remains fragile.

Despite diplomatic efforts, sporadic violence has continued in border areas, underscoring the challenges of enforcing any lasting truce between Israel and Hezbollah.

Further developments are expected as both sides assess the situation and regional actors call for restraint.
