Nairobi police warn against unauthorized Saba Saba protests

NAIROBI — Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud on Sunday said authorities had not received any formal notification of planned Saba Saba demonstrations expected to take place in the capital on Monday, warning that any gatherings held without prior authorization would be considered unlawful.

Speaking ahead of the annual Saba Saba commemoration, Mohamud said security agencies were prepared to maintain law and order and ensure normal operations across the city.

“We have not received any notification regarding demonstrations planned for tomorrow. Any gathering that has not complied with the legal requirements will be treated as illegal,” he said.

The police commander emphasized that Monday would remain a normal working day and urged residents to continue with their daily activities without disruption.

Authorities also announced heightened security measures in Nairobi, particularly within the Central Business District (CBD). Mohamud said vehicles entering the city centre would undergo security screening as part of efforts to prevent potential security incidents and maintain public safety.

The warning comes amid speculation on social media and calls by some activists and opposition supporters for demonstrations linked to the annual Saba Saba movement, which has historically been associated with demands for political reforms, accountability, and democratic freedoms in Kenya.

Security agencies have not indicated any specific threats but say precautionary measures are necessary to safeguard public order and protect businesses, commuters, and government installations.

The Saba Saba movement, named after July 7 (“Saba Saba” meaning “Seven Seven” in Swahili), traces its origins to pro-democracy protests in 1990 that called for the introduction of multiparty politics in Kenya. The date has since become a symbolic occasion for civic activism and political expression.

Police have urged members of the public to cooperate with security officers and follow all lawful procedures governing public assemblies and demonstrations.
