MOGADISHU — The electoral committee of Somalia’s newly formed North East State has formally announced the rules and procedures for the upcoming election of the regional parliament’s leadership, including the crucial positions of Speaker and Deputy Speakers.

According to the committee, candidates interested in contesting for the position of parliamentary speaker will be required to pay a registration fee of $5,000 for men and $2,500 for women. For the deputy speaker posts, male candidates must pay $3,000, while female candidates will be charged $1,500.

The committee said the reduced fees for women are aimed at encouraging greater female participation in leadership roles.

The leadership election is scheduled to take place on August 23, 2025, in Las Anod, the interim capital of the new state. The committee stressed that all candidates must meet the financial obligations and adhere to the rules of conduct laid out for the contest.

Federal Minister of Interior, Ali Hoosh, welcomed the announcement and urged the committee to ensure that the election process is conducted transparently, fairly, and free from external interference. He also encouraged lawmakers and aspiring leaders to demonstrate integrity and respect for democratic norms during the polls.

Political observers note that this election will mark a significant step in consolidating governance structures in North East State, which was officially recognized earlier this year as part of Somalia’s ongoing federalization process.

The outcome of the leadership vote is expected to shape the political direction of the region, with the new Speaker playing a central role in steering parliamentary debates, legislative agendas, and relations with the federal government.

The electoral committee concluded its announcement by calling on all stakeholders, including clan elders, civil society groups, and political leaders, to support a peaceful and orderly election that reflects the will of the people of North East State.
