HARGEISA – Reports have emerged of alleged secret security operations in Hargeisa targeting individuals who oppose the policies of Somaliland’s administration, including journalists, social media activists, religious figures, and political opponents.
According to media sources, security forces affiliated with the Somaliland administration have been conducting operations aimed at monitoring and restricting voices critical of President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Irro’s” government. The reports claim that the measures are intended to limit public criticism and prevent the expansion of opposition activities amid growing political tensions.
The alleged actions come as disagreements continue between the government and opposition groups, particularly the KULMIYE and Waddani political movements, which have provided platforms for figures expressing criticism of government policies.
Sources cited by local media said several young social media activists have received warnings over their online activities, with some allegedly being threatened with arrest if they continue publishing criticism of the administration or content viewed by authorities as damaging to the government’s reputation.
The reports follow the recent arrest of artist Khalid Kamil, as well as allegations of pressure against religious figures over their positions regarding Israel and other political issues. Activists have also raised concerns about increased scrutiny of online platforms and attempts to restrict critical commentary.
Human rights advocates and media organizations have repeatedly emphasized the importance of protecting freedom of expression, independent journalism, and the right to peaceful political participation in Somaliland.
