RIYADH – Saudi Arabia has emerged as the largest buyer of drones manufactured in Taiwan after purchasing unmanned aerial systems worth $47.2 million last month, according to trade data from Taiwan’s Ministry of Finance.

The purchase represents the biggest single-month drone export shipment from Taiwan to one country since the government began recording this category of export data in 2023.
The deal highlights the growing importance of unmanned aerial technology in global defense and security markets, as countries increasingly invest in drones for surveillance, reconnaissance, border security, and military operations.
Taiwan has been expanding its drone industry in recent years, with the government supporting local manufacturers as part of efforts to strengthen technological capabilities and develop new international markets. The island has identified unmanned systems as a key sector for future security and industrial growth.
For Saudi Arabia, the purchase reflects its broader efforts to modernize its defense capabilities and diversify its sources of military technology. The kingdom has increased investment in advanced defense systems, including drones and other emerging technologies, as part of its wider military modernization programs.
The transaction also comes amid rising demand for unmanned aerial vehicles across the Middle East, where drones have become an increasingly important element in modern security strategies.
Analysts say the deal could mark a deeper expansion of defense and technology cooperation between Taiwan and Gulf countries, although such agreements may also attract international attention due to the strategic importance of drone technology.
Taiwan’s record export to Saudi Arabia demonstrates the rapid growth of its drone manufacturing sector and its ambition to become a more significant player in the global unmanned systems market.
