Somali Airlines Set to Launch First International Flights in October

MOGADISHU — Somalia’s national carrier, Somali Airlines, is expected to resume international passenger flights in October, marking a major step in the government’s efforts to fully restore the country’s flag carrier after decades of limited operations.

The planned launch will represent the airline’s first scheduled international services in years, signaling renewed momentum in Somalia’s aviation sector and the country’s broader economic recovery.

Officials say the expansion is part of a long-term strategy to rebuild Somali Airlines into a competitive regional carrier capable of connecting Somalia with key destinations across Africa, the Middle East and beyond. The initial routes are expected to focus on regional hubs before gradually expanding to additional international destinations.

The resumption of international operations is expected to improve air connectivity for Somali citizens, business travelers and the large Somali diaspora, while facilitating trade, investment and tourism.

Government officials have described the revival of Somali Airlines as a strategic national project aimed at restoring one of Somalia’s most recognizable public institutions and strengthening the country’s transport infrastructure.

The airline has undergone a gradual restructuring in recent years, including improvements in operational planning, technical capacity and regulatory compliance, as authorities work to meet international aviation standards.

Industry observers say a successful return to international markets could increase competition in Somalia’s aviation sector, reduce travel costs on some routes and provide passengers with additional travel options.

The launch also reflects broader efforts by the Federal Government to modernize the country’s transport sector and expand Somalia’s integration into regional and global air networks.

Authorities are expected to announce the airline’s inaugural international destinations, flight schedules, fleet details and ticket sales arrangements ahead of the official launch in October.
