LasAnod – Somalia’s Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, Ali Hoosh, has met with Garaad Jama, one of the most influential traditional leaders from the newly-established Northeastern state, in a bid to strengthen cooperation in the region’s state-building process, officials confirmed Tuesday.

The meeting, held at Garaad Jama’s residence in LasAnod, centered on fostering closer ties between government institutions and traditional leadership. Both sides exchanged views on the ongoing efforts to establish a functional and inclusive federal member state in the Northeast.

According to the Ministry of Interior, discussions highlighted the indispensable role of traditional leaders in maintaining peace, stability, and social unity, especially during periods of political transition.

Minister Hoosh underlined that the success of the Northeastern state project depends on strong collaboration between the Federal Government of Somalia, local administrations, and respected elders.

“Traditional leaders are at the heart of community trust and reconciliation. Their involvement is vital for inclusive and sustainable state-building,” the minister said.

Garaad Jama welcomed the visit, affirming his commitment to support the peace and reconciliation process. He also called for fairness and transparency in the ongoing selection of Members of Parliament for the new Northeastern state assembly, an issue that has sparked debate among various stakeholders.

The visit forms part of a wider outreach campaign by the Federal Government of Somalia aimed at engaging elders, community leaders, and civil society representatives in shaping a regional administration that reflects the will and diversity of the people.
