MOGADISHU — The bicameral parliament of Somalia on Tuesday approved the national budget for the 2026 fiscal year, totaling $1,386,807,242 (one billion, three hundred eighty-six million, eight hundred seven thousand, two hundred forty-two dollars).

The budget passed with 174 lawmakers voting in favor, four opposing, and one abstaining. Lawmakers described the approval as a significant step toward fiscal stability and socio-economic development.

Parliamentary leaders said the budget allocates funding for key sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, education, security, and social services. “This budget reflects our commitment to improving the living standards of all citizens and addressing urgent needs in security and public services,” said the Speaker of the House.

Security remains a top priority, with funds earmarked to strengthen local police forces, support community policing initiatives, and counter armed groups operating in the region. In healthcare, the budget plans to expand access to hospitals, clinics, and essential medicines, while the education sector will benefit from teacher training programs and improved school infrastructure.

Officials also emphasized transparency and oversight mechanisms to ensure effective use of public funds. “Careful monitoring and accountability will be central to the implementation of this budget,” said a senior finance committee member.

The 2026 budget follows last year’s plan, which faced criticism over delays in project execution. Lawmakers said lessons from previous fiscal years informed the new budget’s design, aiming for more timely delivery of public services and infrastructure projects.

Analysts say the budget approval is a crucial signal of the Somali government’s intent to stabilize the region, attract investment, and respond to citizens’ needs amid ongoing economic and security challenges.
