MOGADISHU — Renowned Somali poet and cultural figure Mustafa Sheikh Elmi has returned to Mogadishu after spending nearly two decades away from Somalia, marking a significant moment for the country’s literary and cultural community.
To mark his return, Somalia’s Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Abdifatah Qasim Mahmoud, hosted a luncheon and special welcoming reception in Mogadishu in honor of the veteran poet.
The minister warmly welcomed Mustafa Sheikh Elmi back to Somalia and praised his longstanding contribution to Somali poetry, literature, culture and the preservation of the country’s historical heritage.
During the reception, Minister Abdifatah Qasim said Somali poets and other cultural figures have played an important role in preserving the country’s identity, traditions, history and social values through generations.
He emphasized that Somalia’s cultural heritage should be protected and promoted, particularly at a time when the country is seeking to strengthen national identity and encourage greater participation in cultural and artistic activities.
The minister also called on Somali intellectuals, poets, writers, artists and other creative professionals living both inside and outside the country to contribute to efforts to develop and preserve Somalia’s literary and cultural heritage.
The reception brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, including Director General Abdullahi Hayir Duale, department directors, managers and advisers. Politicians, poets, national artists and other distinguished guests also attended the gathering.
As part of the ceremony, Mustafa Sheikh Elmi received traditional Somali cultural gifts in recognition of his contribution to Somali literature and as a gesture of appreciation for his return to the country.
The minister also presented gifts to senior ministry officials, poets, national artists, managers and advisers, commending them for their continued dedication and service to the Somali people.
Minister Abdifatah Qasim urged the ministry’s leadership and staff to redouble their efforts in strengthening Somalia’s information, culture and tourism sectors. He stressed the importance of providing effective public services while promoting Somalia’s cultural heritage both nationally and internationally.
Speaking at the reception, Mustafa Sheikh Elmi thanked the minister and the Ministry for the warm welcome and honor extended to him. He expressed his happiness at returning to his homeland after 20 years abroad and said he was prepared to once again play a role in promoting Somali poetry, literature, culture and community service.
His return to Mogadishu is being viewed as an important development for Somalia’s cultural and literary scene, particularly given his long-standing association with Somali poetry and cultural expression.
After two decades abroad, the poet’s return also provides an opportunity for a new generation of Somali writers, poets and artists to reconnect with experienced cultural figures and draw from the country’s rich literary traditions.
The event underscored the government’s stated interest in supporting Somalia’s poets, artists and intellectuals and in creating greater opportunities for cultural figures to participate in national cultural development.
Mustafa Sheikh Elmi’s return to Mogadishu after 20 years abroad represents not only a personal homecoming, but also a renewed connection between a prominent Somali literary figure and the cultural community of his homeland.
