Somali political talks collapse amid reports of heightened tensions in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU — Political negotiations between rival Somali political actors have reportedly collapsed without agreement, according to sources familiar with the discussions, as tensions continue to rise in the capital.

The talks were aimed at narrowing political differences and preventing further escalation between competing camps in Mogadishu.

However, sources said the discussions ended in disagreement after a series of disputes between key political figures involved in the process.

The claims could not be independently verified, and none of the parties involved have publicly confirmed the details of the negotiations.

According to the same sources, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was accused by some participants of withdrawing from previously reported understandings.

Those allegations relate to earlier informal commitments said to have been discussed between political figures, including former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.

The sources further claimed that expectations for a final agreement were undermined by last-minute disagreements over implementation issues.

There was no immediate response from the presidency or allied officials regarding the allegations.

Meanwhile, reports emerged of increased military movements in parts of Mogadishu following the breakdown of talks.

Sources said troops were observed being mobilised in the Mirinaayo area of the capital.

The purpose of the reported movements could not be independently confirmed.

At the same time, other sources claimed that armed personnel loyal to former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed had taken positions in buildings near the Lido beachfront.

These claims could also not be independently verified by independent observers.

Security activity was reported to have increased across several parts of Mogadishu as political tensions intensified.

Residents in some areas said they had observed heightened security presence and movement of armed personnel.

There has been no official confirmation from the Somali government or opposition figures regarding any military build-up.

Analysts say political disputes in Somalia often generate competing narratives that are difficult to independently verify in real time.

The situation remains tense, although it is unclear whether the developments will lead to further escalation.

The United Nations and regional partners have in the past called for restraint during periods of heightened political tension in Somalia.

Mogadishu has experienced similar stand-offs in recent years linked to electoral disputes and political rivalries.

Further developments are expected as the situation continues to evolve.
