MOGADISHU — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday inaugurated the new headquarters of the Ministry of Ports and Maritime Transport in Mogadishu, highlighting his administration’s push to develop the country’s vast maritime sector as a cornerstone of economic recovery.

Speaking at the ceremony, attended by senior government officials, maritime authorities and international partners, the president said Somalia is seeking to transform its long coastline into a strategic economic asset through investment, reform and improved governance.
“The Federal Government of Somalia is committed to making the Somali Sea the backbone of the country’s economic growth,” he said, pointing to ongoing efforts to modernize ports, strengthen maritime security and ensure sustainable management of marine resources.
Officials said the new headquarters is designed to improve coordination within the ministry and enhance its institutional capacity at a time when the government is attempting to expand maritime trade and attract foreign investment. Somalia has one of the longest coastlines in Africa, stretching along key global shipping lanes that connect the Middle East, Asia and Europe.
The Horn of Africa nation is working to rebuild critical infrastructure after decades of conflict that weakened state institutions and limited its ability to fully exploit maritime resources. Authorities say improving port infrastructure and governance is central to boosting exports, increasing revenue collection and integrating Somalia more deeply into regional and global markets.
Analysts note that maritime development also carries security implications, as Somalia continues to confront challenges including illegal fishing, piracy and trafficking along its waters. Strengthening oversight of territorial waters, officials say, will be essential to protecting national resources and ensuring stability.
During the visit, President Hassan Sheikh toured the facility and met ministry staff, commending their role in advancing reforms and improving service delivery in a sector seen as vital to the country’s long-term development.
The inauguration comes as Somalia steps up broader economic reforms, with the government seeking to leverage international partnerships to unlock growth opportunities in fisheries, shipping and port logistics.
