NAIROBI — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was expected to depart Nairobi on Monday and return to Mogadishu following talks with Kenyan President William Ruto, amid growing efforts to resolve political disagreements over Somalia’s electoral process.

No official details were released on the outcome of the discussions. However, political sources familiar with the meetings said the leaders focused on encouraging dialogue among Somali stakeholders and supporting a broadly acceptable electoral agreement.

The talks took place against a backdrop of heightened political tensions in Somalia, where disputes over the electoral framework have fuelled calls for a consensus-based solution involving the federal government, opposition figures and regional leaders.

President Mohamud met Ruto during a working visit to Kenya’s Narok County, where the two leaders also discussed bilateral relations, regional security, trade and cooperation between the neighbouring countries. Both sides stressed the importance of continued collaboration to promote peace, stability and development across the Horn of Africa.

Kenya has played a key diplomatic role in regional efforts to support Somalia’s stabilisation and security agenda, while maintaining close economic and political ties with Mogadishu.
