MOGADISHU, (HAN) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has spoken on the status of ongoing dialogue between the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somaliland administration, a process that has stretched over several years.
President Mohamud reaffirmed his government’s commitment to pursuing efforts to resolve long-standing political disputes and grievances, with the ultimate aim of reaching a lasting settlement grounded in unity and brotherhood.
He underscored that the talks are vital for Somalia’s future and should not be underestimated, pointing to the Somali people’s strong desire for unity and togetherness.
While acknowledging the political and social challenges that remain, the president emphasized that they must be addressed through genuine dialogue, consultation, and mutual respect.
President Mohamud reiterated that the Federal Government is prepared to facilitate any necessary steps that could lead to a peaceful resolution acceptable to both sides.
Outlining the current phase of discussions, he noted that the dialogue remains at a preliminary stage, with both sides reviewing earlier points of negotiation. He added that the focus is now on building trust to create conditions for a formal agreement in the near future.
In his closing remarks, the president urged Somalis at home and abroad to support the peace process, underlining that unity and cooperation are central to the country’s stability, development, and state-building efforts.
Somaliland, located in northern Somalia, declared independence in 1991 following the collapse of the central government and years of conflict under the Siad Barre regime. While it operates as a self-declared republic with its own institutions, it has not been recognized internationally.
