MOGADISHU — The Federal Government of Somalia, led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has officially identified three categories of goods that are prohibited from being imported into or exported from the country under Somalia’s customs regulations.
The restrictions are part of government efforts to strengthen customs enforcement, tighten border controls and regulate the movement of goods across Somalia.
The three prohibited categories include:
1. Obscene Publications
Materials classified as obscene are prohibited from entering or leaving Somalia under the customs regulations.
2. Goods Intended for Dishonest or Unlawful Purposes
Goods believed to be intended for fraudulent, dishonest or unlawful activities may be stopped or subject to enforcement action by customs authorities.
3. Counterfeit or Fake Goods
Counterfeit and fake products are also prohibited. The measure is intended to protect consumers, legitimate businesses and the integrity of Somalia’s commercial market.
Travellers and Businesses Advised to Take Note
The restrictions are particularly relevant to travellers, traders, importers, exporters and commercial companies transporting goods through Somalia’s airports, seaports and land borders.
Authorities are urging businesses and travellers to familiarize themselves with customs requirements and ensure that all necessary documentation and permits are in place before transporting goods across Somalia’s borders.
Failure to comply with customs regulations could result in seizure of goods, delays, penalties or other enforcement measures, depending on the circumstances and applicable law.
The government says stronger customs enforcement will contribute to better border management, improved regulation of international trade and greater protection for consumers and legitimate businesses.
The measures form part of Somalia’s wider efforts to modernize its customs administration and strengthen oversight of goods entering and leaving the country.
