MOGADISHU, (HAN) — The Somali Ministry of Defense has, for the first time, officially unveiled a special elite unit within the Somali National Army (SNA), equipped with modern military technology including drones, armored vehicles, and combat aircraft.

The newly formed force has been trained to conduct complex and high-level operations aimed at strengthening Somalia’s defense capabilities and enhancing counterterrorism efforts nationwide.

According to senior officials from the Ministry of Defense, members of the elite unit underwent rigorous training in Turkey—particularly at the TURKSOM Military Academy in Mogadishu—as well as at the U.S.-run Balidoogle Air Base in southern Somalia. These institutions specialize in advanced military training, including modern warfare tactics, intelligence operations, and drone warfare.

A senior officer from the TURKSOM mission in Somalia told Inside Somalia that the new unit will operate Turkish-supplied combat aircraft and work closely with the Somali Military Intelligence and Reconnaissance Command. This collaboration will enable the force to conduct precision strikes against high-value targets, especially those affiliated with terrorist groups and organized armed networks.

This development represents a major milestone in Somalia’s ongoing military modernization efforts and underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening its national defense and aerial capabilities. Analysts believe the new elite unit will significantly boost the country’s ability to maintain stability and combat terrorism more effectively.
