MOGADISHU, (HAN) — Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre have extended greetings to all Somalis on the occasion of National Flag Day.
President Mohamud highlighted the significance of October 12, the day the Somali flag was first raised, calling it a symbol of the country’s independence, unity, and national pride.
“Today is a special day for all Somali people. Seventy-one years ago, hero Mohamed Awale Liban designed the Somali flag, which represents our nationhood, independence, unity, and the collective struggle of the Somali people to secure freedom and self-determination,” the president said.
He urged Somalis to unite in strengthening governance, defending the country, and safeguarding national interests, ensuring the legacy of their forebears while preparing a brighter future for coming generations.
Prime Minister Hamza also congratulated Somalis, describing the flag as a symbol of unity and freedom. “National Flag Day stands for the unity of our society. The independence we enjoy today is the result of the sacrifices of the brave men and women who defended the dignity and honor of our people. We must remain united against forces that threaten our peace and development,” he said.
The prime minister called on all Somalis to cherish the hard-won independence and avoid divisions that could undermine national unity.
