KHARTOUM — Somalia’s newly appointed Ambassador to the Republic of Sudan, Dr. Ahmed Jama Omar, has officially presented his diplomatic credentials to General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces.
The formal ceremony marked the beginning of Ambassador Ahmed Jama Omar’s diplomatic assignment in Sudan and reaffirmed the longstanding diplomatic relations between Somalia and Sudan.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Ahmed Jama Omar conveyed Somalia’s commitment to strengthening relations with Sudan and expanding cooperation between the two countries across political, economic, security and social fields.
The meeting also comes at a critical time for Sudan, which has been facing a devastating armed conflict since April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The conflict has caused widespread destruction, displaced millions of people and created one of the world’s most serious humanitarian emergencies. Khartoum and several other parts of the country have been heavily affected by the fighting, while efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire have so far failed to end the conflict.
As Somalia’s representative in Sudan, the new ambassador is expected to play an important role in maintaining communication between Mogadishu and Khartoum and advancing bilateral cooperation during the ongoing crisis.
Somalia and Sudan have maintained close historical and diplomatic relations for decades. The two countries have cooperated on education, culture, security and regional political issues, with Sudan having hosted generations of Somali students and professionals.
The Horn of Africa and the wider Red Sea region have also become increasingly important areas of diplomatic engagement, with Somalia and Sudan sharing common interests in regional stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The presentation of credentials is therefore seen as an important step in strengthening official contacts between the two governments and ensuring continued diplomatic engagement at a time of significant regional challenges.
Ambassador Ahmed Jama Omar is expected to begin his official duties in Khartoum following the presentation ceremony, representing the Federal Republic of Somalia and working to deepen cooperation between the two governments.
The Somali government has continued to emphasise the importance of maintaining strong relations with Sudan and supporting efforts aimed at achieving peace, stability and the protection of civilians amid the ongoing conflict.
