MOGADISHU — Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Sunday called on citizens to unite in defense of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity following Israel’s recognition of the Somaliland region as an independent state.
Speaking before a joint session of Somalia’s bicameral parliament in Mogadishu, Mohamud described Israel’s decision as “completely unacceptable,” calling it a direct challenge to the nationhood, independence and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
He reiterated that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somalia and stressed that the federal government’s position on national unity is nonnegotiable.
“The Somali government and people place the highest priority on protecting our nationhood and unity,” Mohamud said. “We must stand together to prevent threats to our existence as a people and to preserve regional stability and peace.”
The president welcomed support from regional, Arab, African and international partners, thanking them for reaffirming Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also reiterated Somalia’s solidarity with the Palestinian people, condemning forced displacement and violations against civilians.
Mohamud emphasized that Somalia would not allow its territory to be used as a platform for regional or international conflicts.
He urged friendly nations and international organizations to support Somalia’s diplomatic and legal efforts to safeguard its independence, unity and continued existence as a sovereign state.
Israel’s recognition of Somaliland has drawn widespread rejection from regional and international organizations, including the Arab League, the European Union, the Gulf Cooperation Council, the African Union and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, all of which have reaffirmed their support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
