New York – Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman, has stressed the critical need for Somalia to strengthen its voice at the global level while simultaneously pursuing national development priorities.

In an interview with state media following his participation in the 80th anniversary session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Ambassador Osman outlined Somalia’s key objectives at this year’s gathering, which brought together world leaders to deliberate on peace, security, development, and international cooperation.

According to the envoy, Somalia’s delegation has been actively engaged in high-level discussions to ensure the country contributes to shaping global decisions that directly affect developing nations. He noted that Somalia is advocating for increased support in areas such as climate resilience, security stabilization, economic reform, and sustainable development.

“It is an opportunity for us to take part in UN meetings, which will enable us to amplify our voice while also striving for the advancement of our nation,” Ambassador Osman said.

He emphasized that Somalia’s participation at the UN is not only symbolic but also strategic, given the nation’s ongoing transition from decades of conflict toward recovery and stability. With Somalia preparing for upcoming political milestones, including the implementation of constitutional reforms and the strengthening of state institutions, the envoy underscored the importance of securing international backing.

Ambassador Osman further revealed that several UN member states have shown readiness to collaborate with Somalia in advancing its national agenda. This includes commitments to supporting peacebuilding efforts, development programs, and long-term initiatives aimed at protecting the Somali people and safeguarding the country’s future.

The envoy highlighted Somalia’s progress in recent years, such as debt relief milestones under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative, advances in the security sector, and the strengthening of partnerships with international financial institutions. He stressed that maintaining Somalia’s visibility at the UN is essential to ensure these achievements translate into sustainable gains for the Somali population.

“As a nation emerging from prolonged challenges, we must use every platform available to tell our story, present our priorities, and seek practical solutions with the support of the global community,” he added.

The 80th UN General Assembly session has seen Somalia engage in bilateral and multilateral discussions with various states and organizations, with the aim of consolidating diplomatic ties and mobilizing resources for the country’s future development.
